Frequently Asked Questions About Our Scawoo Cobberdogs and our breeding program.
Taking the step to welcome a new puppy to your family is an exciting but sometimes nerve wracking time for families. Families want to make sure they get the right puppy and that is our focus too. Matching a puppy that will compliment your family.
Below are a few common questions that families ask.
WHAT IS AN AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG?
The Australian Cobberdog is a relatively new breed introduced in 2012.
The Australian Cobberdog is a purebreed in the developing stages and is registered with the MDBA.
WHAT BREEDS MAKE UP THE AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG?
There were many breeds involved in the early stages of development. Now the Australian Cobberdog doesn’t really resemble any of those breeds. We are many generations along now and it has it’s own unique identity and well defined characteristics that lend themselves to therapy and service including;- sustained eye contact- emotional warmth- high intuition (reading human emotional states well)- intelligence- high aptitude for training- a calm soothing nature
-cobberdogs can also be goofy and clown like they love to make us laugh
DOES MY PUPPY COME WITH A PEDIGREE?
Yes, each puppy will get a pedigree. Pet puppies come with a NOT FOR BREEDING pedigree.,. The breeder must be a member of the MDBA and a registered Cobberdog Breeder as we are. Our member number is 19144. When all puppies leave for their new homes we apply for their pedigrees. It can take 2 or 3 months till these come back to us.
ARE MY PUPPIES PARENTS HEALTH TESTED?
Absolutly! We are very committed to health testing and parent dogs undertake full breed profiles through orivet so we can match them to produce puppies that will not be affected by any disease that we test for.
We are also committed to hip testing parent dogs so that puppies are given the best possible start to life.
Please see link to our health testing page for more information.
As well as thorough health testing so we know we are using healthy parent dogs we also make matches with diversity in mind. We believe by looking at pedigrees and NOT breeding dogs closely related this results in healthier puppies. At Scawoo we are always looking at diversity so that the puppies we are producing are healthy and robust.
DO YOU GIVE A HEALTH GUARANTEE
Your puppy will come with a lifetime guarantee to not be affected by any of the diseases we test for in the full breed profile at the time of purchase. These diseases are comprehensive and a list can be found on our Scawoo Health Testing page.
Your puppy will have had a vet check and will be in good health at the time of purchase. The vet assesses the overall puppy at time of vaccination We also ask families to have their puppy checked by their own vet within the first 72 hours of arrival.
If a vet check declares the puppy unsound or not in good health the purchase price of the puppy will be refunded (illness only not injury which is out of the breeders control) A veterinary certificate must be provided and the puppy returned to the breeder at the buyers expense. The breeder will not reimburse travel or vet costs. (PLEASE NOTE THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED)
CAN WE CHOOSE WHICH GENDER
Yes you can choose which gender you want. However sometimes a litter you are waiting on may not produce the gender or enough of the gender to go around and in such cases to get the desired gender you may need to wait till another litter.
CAN WE CHOOSE COLOUR
Yes you can choose colour however if you are very specific on colour this can make an extended wait. On our application we ask which colours you wouldnt accept. By excluding a colour or two this gives us much more flexibility to get you the right temperament puppy for your family and in a more timely manner.
WHAT COAT TYPE WILL MY PUPPY HAVE?
We at Scawoo breed dogs that have genetically straight or wavy coats. We do not produce curly coated puppies. Straight and wavy coats are the most desired coat type and in appearance can look very similar, both falling in gentle waves.
DO COBBERDOGS SHED AND ARE THEY HYPOALLERGENIC?
We refer to our cobberdogs as being low shedding. We have 5 cobberdogs and we just don't find hairs anywhere, on pillows, dog beds, on clothing we DO NOT SEE dog hair in our enviroment. However we still say low shedding as everything with hair will shed to some degree, us included. When we brush our cobberdogs we do get some hair on the grooming tools
They are hypoallergenic and in most cases are good for people with allergies. We have sent several cobberdogs to families where someone has an allergy to most dogs but have been fine with cobberdogs. However like anything I'm sure there will be someone out there, still allergic to even a hypoallergenic dog. In the past we have sent some hair from when we have clipped our dogs for an allergy trial or better still sometimes we can organise someone in your area for a meet and greet.
HOW AND WHEN ARE PUPPIES ALLOCATED
At just over 7 weeks we temperament test our puppies, then match them to families. We gather information from our families about their life style, energy levels, if the puppy is for a specific role, if there are other pets in the home and also any gender or colour preferences. We then look at our puppy information and select the puppy that is most likely to work best for your family. This is a long process, and alot of work for us but its been proven that this method works and all the waiting on the families part pays off.
WHEN CAN MY PUPPY BE PICKED UP OR SENT TO ME
At 8 weeks puppies are ready for bigger adventures and are so ready to meet and join their families. We prefer our puppies to go to their families between 8 and 9 weeks.
HOW DO I COLLECT MY PUPPY
We are located in the Lockyer Valley an hour west of Brisbane
Puppies can be collected from us if you are within driving distance. We also arrange a series of meeting points where families can meet and collect their puppy. We currently offer a COFFS HARBOUR meet up point for families in NSW that can make the drive. We also take puppies to Brisbane Airport and fly them all over Australia and beyond.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE PUPPIES IN THEIR FIRST 8 WEEKS AND WILL THEY BE TOILET TRAINED
Your puppy is whelped in our home in a safe clean enviromentDuring your puppies first 8 weeks they will only know love and positive experience and understand that their humans are kindYour puppy is exposed to the badass breeder curriculum which includes getting them accustomed to different types of touchIntroducing them to many sights, sounds and smells thus desensitising themThey will be surrounded by humans that will nurture them and give the best careThey will be weaned onto healthy balanced food for optimal growth and healthThey will be exposed to many types of play equipment, toys, bridges, balance boards, bubbles, seesaw to name a few. They will be exposed to different surfaces and texturesThey will learn to use a dog flapThey will be well on their way to being toilet trainedWe teach them the treat game which we will explain to familiesPuppies have crate exposureThey will have access to a safe outside area, a lovely inside area where they can go in and out as they please during the daytime hours. We also take them on daily excursions into our big yards for big runs and playtimes.
At 6 weeks puppies go to thye vet for their first vaccination, a health check and they are microchipped. At around 7 weeks or 51 days to be exact, we temperament test our australian cobberdog puppies and allocate to families to get you and the puppy the best possible match. Your puppy will also be wormed and given some tummy bug prevention before they leave us to ensure a smooth and healthy transition. At 8 weeks your puppy is so ready to join you and we will have organised a pick up time, a meet up place and time or a flight. WILL MY PUPPY BE DESEXED No, your puppy won't be desexed when you receive them. Lots of research has been done and early desexing is not advised. It's important that your puppy is allowed to do all their growing first and the sex hormones play an important role in growing a structurally healthy dog. Your puppy will come with a desexing contract and must be desexed by 12 months. WILL MY PUPPY COME WITH A BLANKET WITH FAMILIAR SMELLS? Yes! Your puppy will come with a blanket that has been in with the litter and rubbed all over mum . We want our puppies transition to be as smooth as possible and a blanket with smells definitly helps. If you are picking up your pup or meeting us they will also come with a toy : also with familiar smells. If your puppy is flying we cannot send a toy but your pup will have a piece of vet bed that they grew up on and a blanket. Often these things will be their most cherished possessions even as adults. WILL MY PUPPY BE CALM ? HOW WILL THEY ACT ? Your Australian Cobberdog puppy comes with the most amazing core traits on which to build. With training of manners, obedience and time invested into socialising them you can expect your puppy to mature into an awesome dog...BUT cobberdog puppies are like all puppies of every other breed, they will nip and bite (they are teething) they will chew things they shouldnt, wee and poo on your rug (whilst they are learning the more appropriate places), they will completely frustrate you at times,,, they will also make you laugh more than you probably have in a while! BUT with love, patience, kind but firm and consistent training they do very well. They are eager to please and most love training. But they will definitly be cheeky puppies and they do take work to get the WOW dog you probably want. CAN I COME AND VISIT MY PUPPY? Because we wait so long to temperament test (we follow the Badass Breeder Curriculum that states temperament testing is best done as close to 52 days as possible to get a clear view of the puppy) and puppies leave at 8 weeks this doesnt give us a very big window of time for visits. BUT we are working out a way that families that do want to visit a couple of days before gettiing their puppy can. This is a work in progress as it has to be done with the other puppies safety in mind and also that we may have younger litters , but something we are considering. We can also offer a video/facetime call for further away families. WHAT TRAINING DO WE RECOMMEND? Puppy school is a good start. Also the whole family needs to be on board to teach your puppy/dog manners such as four paws on the floor for pats. We also recommend once your puppy is fully vaccinated obedience lessons. Some towns have weekly obedience with no end date. I love these as you always have someone to support you if any issues arise. HOW MANY YEARS HAVE WE BEEN BREEDING ? We have been breeding dogs for 11 years now. We began breeding miniature schnauzers and then began breeding australian cobberdogs in 2020. I was interested in a more human focussed breed and one that could really help people. Rest assured we aren't going anywhere we adore the cobbers and have big visions ahead . We will be here for all our families in years to come. We still support and have contact with many of our schnauzer families. We love following the dogs we have produced and being there for families. HOW MANT LITTERS DO OUR FEMALES HAVE ? We think this is a very important question. Most of our females are now living with guardian families that are also their forever home. These lovely ladies will only have 2 litters as we feel thats a big enough commitment for the families. This way after 2 litters the female is desexed and lives happy ever after in the home she has always known. For dogs that live with us generally 3 is the amount of litters they have if they do pregnancy well, whelp freely and are great mums. If a dog clearly doesn't like the mum thing we call it quits thereand will stop after 1 litter . Occasionally we will do our maximum of 4 litters if everything has been perfect and their litters have been smaller in numbers. Thats is our absolute maximum we have our mums best interests at heart ALWAYS WHERE DO OUR DOGS LIVE - DO THEY LIVE IN KENNELS The dogs that live at Scawoo live inside with us. They are happiest when they are close. They aren't dogs to be outside all day on their own or with the other dogs. They have been bred to be human companions and they want us close. In between litters they sleep on our bedroom floor and hop up for cuddles when we wake. They are all crate trained but generally they are free to sleep where they like now as mature adults. Of course if we are out for the day they are just fine and free to go in and out the dog flap as they choose, but they do love it when we get home. OUR DOGS DO NOT LIVE IN KENNELS HOW MUCH ARE OUR AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG PUPPIES ? Our cobberdog puppies are currently $5,500 DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION THAT WE HAVENT ANSWERED?
